Enhanced Health in Care Homes
The Enhanced Health in Care Homes 360 Interactive Training Video App was commissioned by the Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) team of Health Education England, now part of NHS England, and created in partnership with national experts within NHS @Home and the NHS England Enhanced Health in Care Homes programme.
The main aim of this training was to encourage proactive care and avoid unnecessary hospital admissions by helping care home staff understand what is normal for each patient, recognise when they are unwell and what action they need to take.
The resources comprise of seven immersive 360 interactive video scenarios, each covering a separate care home resident representing the following priority areas in the Enhanced Health in Care Homes program.
1. Dementia and communication
2. Personalisation
3. Hydration and nutrition
4. Oral health
5. Mobility and falls
6. Wound care
7. End of life
Each scenario includes detailed documentation for that resident with a profile and extracts from their care plan.
The training was created to address an inequity in education resources for the care home environment and designed to avoid unnecessary hospital admissions by helping care home professionals and carers be able to:
- Measure a complete set of physical vital signs (observations) to inform escalation and conversations with health professionals. All of these observations can be easily measured in care homes.
- Record observations onto a National Early Warning Score (NEWS) physical observation chart to quickly recognise if someone is becoming unwell. A change in vital signs suggests worsening health. For example, a rise in heart rate or temperature may suggest an infection. NEWS is a system used widely across health care settings in the United Kingdom.
- Calculate a NEWS score from the recordings on a NEWS chart, understanding what is normal for each resident.
- Recognise the soft and early signs of deterioration to identify potentially unwell residents.
- Identify signs of deterioration in all seven of the Enhanced Health in Care Homes priority areas.
- Speak with the most appropriate health professional at the right time.
- Use the SBARD structured communication tool to pass on the most relevant information about a resident’s condition accurately to the health professional to support their professional decision making.
- Act appropriately according to the resident’s care plan and treatment escalation plan.
You seem to engage in the training more. You feel like you’re almost there. It’s a great way of training. I was really impressed with it. Lovina, Nurse Assistant
