Nursing in Adult Prison Healthcare Settings
These resources were commissioned by the Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) team of Health Education England, now part of NHS England, with collaboration from national experts within NHS England, Health and Justice and the National Nursing and Midwifery Directorate
The app was designed to explain and promote the unique working environments and career opportunities available within UK prison health services. Most of the filming took place at HMP Guys Marsh, a working category C men’s prison in Dorset England, in collaboration with prisoners, experienced prison healthcare staff and the prison officers who support them.
The 5 interactive scenarios were based on the personal experiences of staff, to give the learner a firsthand immersive experience of what to expect when delivering healthcare in a prison environment cover the following areas:
- Placement opportunities with 360 video interviews of prison healthcare professionals, prison officers and a prisoner in their cell, all sharing their personal experiences of healthcare within the prison system.
- Optimising safety and reducing risks: developing pre-placement awareness to understand potential challenges for nursing students in adult prison healthcare settings.
- Managing difficult situations using conflict resolution and de-escalation techniques.
- Managing pain relief in adult prison healthcare settings.
- Caring for prisoners in wider healthcare settings.
Each scenario includes an associated eLearning module and workbook.
I would definitely loved to have used this type of equipment and immersive experience more during my degree. Rhea, Student Nurse
